The Modern-Day Slave

Readers,
As we talked about modern day slavery this week, I began to think about how terrible that concept really could become. When African-American slavery was still being implemented, there were certain rules. Because one paid so much money for a slave, they had a vested interest in feeding them and keeping them healthy and alive.
But this idea of modern-day slave work is much more frightening. Employers have the power to keep their employees working for as long as they want, for as little wages as they want. On top of this, if the workers are forced to sign pay stubs, they don't have to be paid at all. This means that an employer could essentially pay his/her workers nothing at all and care less about it. The employees would be stuck with no money and no way out. Worse than being jobless and homeless, it would be indentured servitude.
The situation, however, could get worse. I thought about "illegal immigrants" in America, and about how many people are saying that they get paid very little. Potentially, they could be in a worse situation than "slave-workers" in other countries, because those slave-workers have governments that try to make laws to help them. If the worker is illegal, they couldn't complain or ask for help from the government because they would be deported. It would be quite a hole to get into, and one that I do not know how to fix.

  1. I agree with you that this is an absolutely horrible thing that is going on right now in the world, and I also have no idea how we would even begin to eliminate these conditions other than enforce the rules even stronger than we have been. Unfortunately, the slavery you talk about isn't the only slavery going on. People have been kidnapped and are slaves with absolutely no freedom whatsoever.A 17 year old girl was abducted and forced into sex slavery. After seven years, she was found, pregnant and addicted to heroin.(See Link http://www.covchurch.org/cov/news/item6075 or http://gvnet.com/humantrafficking/USA.htm) So using money for slavery isn't the only problem of slavery going on right now.
