Keep Talking

Readers,
Recently our class talked about the right to free speech. We looked at different examples of speech and tried to determine whether or not they would be protected. It was an interesting exercise, but what stunned me is the amount of times when our class, myself included, did not know when something was protected by the constitution. The First Amendment is probably the most important right we have as Americans. It allows us to spread honest information, keep track of our government, and create an extraordinarily influential citizen base. But we can only fully use the rights if we know what they are. I could understand not being familiar with gun protection laws, or something else that is not very pertinent, but freedom of speech is something we should all know the exact specifics of, because without it we would not be the country we are today.
